Doing Our Part To Warm The Planet
When we bought the Zeven 11 last year, one of the things we planned to change was the yard. The previous owner went for the “natural” look. Meaning that she didn’t do any maintenance or upkeep at all. The bushes around the fence were left to grow wild, there was more ivy and moss covering the ground than grass and there were a lot of sick trees. She did have a couple trees cut down a few years ago, but she left the wood in a pile in the middle of the yard and all of it had rotted.
Christine and I wanted a more open plan with lots of space for Marcus to play. After some planning and getting approval from the town, we started the transformation. The weekend we went to London with Jeff and Staci, the gardener came and cut down 70 trees and bushes. Yes 70. Most of them were tall, sick pine trees that dripped sap every where. The ones along the front of the house were leaning so far they were threatening to fall over onto the power lines.
Coming back from the trip was quite a shock. Everything was gone (except for the trees we had told them to keep). I was surprised that they were able to do it so quickly. The next week, they dug up all the roots and leveled the ground.
The next step is to bring in some soil, put up a new fence and then in the Spring, we’ll plant grass and other plants. I’m really looking forward to the Summer when I’ll be able to play with Marcus outside in the grass.

In order to counteract Jon and Christine’s efforts to further warm our planet, sister-in-law Staci (who still weeps when she sees these pictures) plans cut her CO2 emissions by not driving a car for a year (oh wait, I am already doing that in Amsterdam!). Ok, instead I will teach Marcus to hug trees and eventually plant a few back in his parents yard:-) The kid’s gotta have some to climb and build a proper fort in, ya know!

[...] As you may remember, last November, we began the process of landscaping our yard. Since then, we’ve had a new fence installed, the patio has been enlarged, more dirt was brought in to level things out. [...]
