South of France – Part 1

03 Sep 2008 @ 23:02

My friend, Nic, turned 30 a couple weeks ago and to celebrate, he had a group of friends join him at his father’s house in the South of France for a long weekend. Christine and I decided to stretch it out to a long week and drove down. We stopped in Lyon, Avignon, Cassis, Toulon, Monaco, Tourrettes-sur-Loup and Cannes before heading on to Saint Paul en Foret where Stig (Nic’s father) lives.

Friday

Packed up Marcus and sent him off with oma and opa for the week. Christine cried and I was sad. Then we started planning our trip. We booked a hotel in Lyon and then found a hotel in Cannes. Because of a referral Christine made to her former boss, we were told we should treat ourselves to a nice dinner anywhere we wanted. I did some searching and found La Palme D’or, a 2-star Michelin restaurant in Cannes. Christine called and made reservations for Wednesday. After all of the planning and reservation making, we finally got around to packing a little after midnight and sleep a little after 1 am.

Saturday

Without our two-legged alarm clock going off at 6:30 am, we were able to sleep in a bit (9 am). After a quick breakfast, we loaded up the car and got on the road around 10:15. Our route took us via Brussels to Luxembourg where we turned South towards Lyon. On the ride down to Lyon, I felt myself coming down with a sinus cold. I wasn’t looking forward to the next week of being in hotels and their cranked up A/C.

We got to the hotel around 5 pm and recharged our batteries. In the evening, we took the bus into the center of town and wandered around the shopping district. We ended up having dinner at Le Layon. It was quite nice. When doing the research for our trip, I had looked up some restaurants in Lyon to have our fancy dinner at. This one had come up in my search but wasn’t fancy enough. We didn’t seek it out when we were looking for a place to eat, but ate there because it was in a nice location and the menu looked good. It wasn’t until midway through the meal that I realized it was one of the restaurants I had checked out.

After dinner, we took in the view from Notre-Dame de Fourviere.
